Spiritual: “Oh what a beautiful city” by Edward Boatner
Art Song: “Night” by Florence Price

Ella Mbali Vaughn is 17 years old and a junior at Walnut Hills High School. She began her singing journey in 4th grade thanks to serendipity or tragedy depending on how you look at it. At age 9, Ella badly broke her wrist in a unicycle accident at circus camp (yes, seriously!) which prevented her from piano and guitar lessons for close to a year, so she started voice lessons as a way to remain in music.

Singing is a major part of Ella’s life—she regularly performs at her school in musical theatre productions and at community events, she attends vocal institutes/camps in the summer, she is in multiple choirs, participates in vocal competitions several times a year, and has been studying opera for three years in one of the few high school opera training programs in the country.

Contemporary Art Song: “Thou Alone Canst Inspire” by Jacqueline Hairston
Operatic Aria: Ingemisco, from Requiem by Josê Maurícío Nuñes García

I am the fourth child in a family of eight kids, with an identical twin. I was homeschooled my whole life without being afforded music lessons, but that did not stop me from picking up the accordion and messing around on the piano at church. At the age of nineteen years old I took my first voice lesson, it was then that I realized my obsession with Pavarotti and the three tenors could take shape through my own art and with my own voice. It took time to work on myself and figure out how to make my voice the study of my young life, but I managed to get into community college and into the University of Michigan; without the support of my parents. I am gratefully studying at U-M with Dr. Toppin on a full-tuition, four-year scholarship. I am currently a Junior, even though it is only my second year at U-M because of community college credits and goal focused work on my rep list. I hope to continue my education and gain a masters degree, after my bachelors. When I do gain my bachelors, I will be the first child in my family to earn such a degree from a four-year university (I am also a first-generation student.) I believe my voice is a gift from God to enrich the lives of others and to make this human experience more enjoyable.
